Ben's Comp Newsletter: Issue 011

Hey,

Hope you're having a productive week. Here's your bi-weekly dose of Nuke knowledge!

TCL TIPS FOR VISUALIZING INFORMATION IN YOUR COMP
I'm constantly using TCL to display knob values on my node labels, and different information in text nodes. There are some expressions I use daily, and others I always have to look up to remember, so I thought it would be beneficial to create a list of TCL snippets for myself & everyone reading this newsletter to refer to when they're looking for specific expressions.

RE-GRAINING YOUR COMP USING EXISTING PLATE GRAIN
The best way to add grain to your comp & get it to match the plate, is to just use the grain from the plate! I wrote a quick tutorial on how to achieve this, as well as outlining when you should use this technique, some of the pitfalls you might encounter, as well as how to work around them.

EMBRACE THE POWER OF SMART VECTORS
Ever since Smart Vectors were introduced to Nuke, they've saved my ass so many times when trying to track & warp something to an organically-moving person. No more manual grid warping!

Chris Wetherly from The Foundry has a great demo video that outlines how Smart Vectors work, and shows which cases they can help you get a better result in your comp. Click here to watch!

Pranjal Choudhary was the winner of The Foundry's SmartVector competition -- his winning entry is the gif you see above. Click here to view the video on Vimeo!

CREATIVITY, INC.
Last year, I went through a bit of a slump & was losing enthusiasm for VFX, and the way our crazy industry operates. I just so happened to have Creativity, Inc. sitting on my bookshelf un-read, so decided to pick it up and scan through it. Instead, I ended up reading it cover-to-cover faster than any book I can recall in recent history!

I was blown away by the stories Ed Catmull shares from Pixar's early days working with Steve Jobs, right through to the more-recent years where they're consistently improving and achieving success. This book is filled with thought processes and lessons learned on how to effectively solve creative problems, and is incredibly insightful in the literal context of VFX & Animation.

Here's a link to buy it from Amazon.com (don't forget to switch the .com to your local Amazon store). For a more-thorough read of what to expect, I highly recommend you read Amazon's description, or click the image of the book above to read reviews from the back cover of the book.

I genuinely hope you get the same value from reading Creativity, Inc. as I did.

If you've created a gizmo or python script to solve a common problem or speed up your workflow, please reply to this email and let me know about it's existence! I'd love to help spread the word, to help us all be better compositors together!
