Ben's Comp Newsletter: Issue 009

Hey,

Thankyou for taking the time to fill out the survey  I sent out with the last issue. I gained some valuable insight on what kinds of things to share in this & future issues of this newsletter.  Let's keep kicking ass together!

GIVE IT 10 -- HOW TO GENERATE NEW IDEAS WHEN YOU HAVE NONE
We’ve all been in that place where we’re watching our shot on loop, can see something is missing, but just can’t figure out what that thing is. I figured out a useful solution to this problem, which I'm happy to share with you in this article!

ANTIALIASING RECOVERY
Lei Yang, Pedro V. Sander, Jason Lawrence & Hugues Hoppe wrote a paper on how non-linear image filtering can damage edges in your image, and they share a method on how to solve this issue!

Martin Kenzel has taken this algorithm and implemented it into a gizmo using BlinkScript! Some applications for this tool include:
  • Smoothing out a harsh grade
  • Smoothing out edges on a crunched key
  • Remapping and/or filtering a zDepth pass
You can download the gizmo here!

KNOBSCRIPTER
Adrian Pueyo has created a super useful tool to make scripting hidden callback knobs with python (like knobChanged, which I introduced in Issue 007 of this newsletter) a lot faster & more intuitive.

You can download KnobScripter here, or watch a tutorial on how it works here.

NVIDIA'S NEW DEEP-LEARNING BASED INPAINTING ALGORITHM
NVIDIA have developed a new "inpainting" algorithm, making use of a neural network hooked up to image databases, to automatically repair errors & re-create details in an image. You can read more about how it works here, or simply watch the impressive example video here.

If you've created a gizmo or python script to solve a common problem or speed up your workflow, please reply to this email and let me know about it's existence! I'd love to help spread the word, to help us all be better compositors together!
