Ben's Comp Newsletter: Issue 008

I would like to start off this issue with a sincere thankyou, for signing up and continuing to read this newsletter. I hope you're enjoying reading it as much as I'm enjoying putting it together!

Next time you submit a render to the farm or have a spare 3 minutes, I would really appreciate if you could answer a couple questions about how I can make this newsletter the best it can be! Please click here to read & answer the questions.*|ELSE:|*I would like to start off this issue with a sincere thankyou for signing up and continuing to read this newsletter. With that out of the way, let's get on with this issue!

CREATIVITY VS. PRODUCTIVITY
There is a never-ending battle between making your shot "perfect", and calling it complete so you can move on. I wrote this article to share my thoughts on how to balance creativity against productivity, using Pareto's Principle.

DISABLE PANEL
Pranjal Choudhary recently reached out to share some tools he has created with the community! My favourite is DisablePanel, which allows you to easily disable/enable a preset list of nodes.

In production, I find myself constantly toggling nodes to compare the before and after results on a shot. When look-developing a shot, I'm often doing this with many nodes at once, which requires lots of scrolling around my Nuke script to select said nodes over and over again. Pranjal has completely streamlined this process with DisablePanel, by letting you save that list of nodes for easy access when you need it!

You can download DisablePanel here, or check out some of Pranjal's other creations here.

CREATE NORMALS FROM LUMINANCE
Erwan Leroy has created a fantastic suite of tools for creating and manipulating Vectors, UV maps and Normal maps; the highlight being an easy way to fake a normal map from luminance!

You can read more about how he's achieving this on his website!

DISCOVER HIDDEN NODES
By clicking through Other > All Plugins > Update, you can get access to a bunch of hidden nodes! It seems this option exists mostly to hold older, legacy versions of nodes (under T, you'll notice there are multiple versions of the Tracker node). But you can also find some fun stuff, including:
  • Mind Read -- This reads your mind and comps for you.
  • Blocky -- Pixellates your image (I've found a use for this on multiple projects!)
  • CCorrect -- Old ColorCorrect node, with a mid-tone bias for contrast.
  • ChannelSelector -- Shuffles a selected channel into all channels. Handy for helping to explain how the shuffle node works when your junior colleagues ask!
  • Modeler -- Can create Custom 3D Geometry! Seems like an earlier, or different version of ModelBuilder.
  • Inpaint -- like Photoshop's content-aware fill, except extremely slow...

8 SECRETS TO INTERGALACTIC CONQUEST
This talk was shared by a colleague last year, and it stuck with me. Bradley Munkowitz, more-commonly known as GMUNK, is an art director and motion designer from California. You might recognize his outstanding UI work from Oblivion, opening titles from Tron Legacy, or this awesome live-action projection mapping project.

Straight from YouTube's description: In this shiny new lecture, GMUNK will share 8 pearls of wisdom off the record, up close and deeply personal — rules that keep him fresh & balanced as an independent Designer and Director.

This talk inspires me every time I listen to it, so I wanted to share it with the community! Watch "8 Secrets to Intergalactic Conquest" here.

If you've created a gizmo or python script to solve a common problem or speed up your workflow, please reply to this email and let me know about it's existence! I'd love to help spread the word, to help us all be better compositors together!
